⭐ Why Melinda Loves Cheeseburger Sliders with Hawaiian Rolls

    Melinda Keckler in her kitchen.

Sliders are easy to make! Enjoy them for a weeknight dinner at home or double the recipe and feed a crowd. Either way, these are ready in about 30 minutes.

Hawaiian Sweet Rolls are convenient. You can find them in (most) any grocery store.

Make them ahead of time. Cheeseburger sliders can be made ahead and refrigerated until you are ready to send them to the oven!

🍞 Ingredients to Have on Hand

Ingredients for cheeseburger sliders in bowls on a table.

The ingredients for Cheeseburger Sliders with Hawaiian Rolls can easily be kept on hand, making these super convenient. Like my recipe for Philly Cheesesteak Bites, the sliders are a delicious combination of meat and melted cheese.

Hawaiian Sweet Rolls: These rolls are so good! They are the perfect combination of slightly sweet with a hint of pineapple so they're a great complement to savory slider ingredients.

You can use either a large bag of 16 sliders (photo below, I bought those at Costco) or a smaller bag of 12 sliders.

A bag of Hawaiian Sweet Rolls.

Ground Beef: One pound of ground beef is plenty regardless of whether you make 12 or 16 sliders.

American Cheese: This creates the melty, cheesy, bottom layer for the sliders. It's pre-sliced, easy to handle and once heated, it spreads evenly. It's also a somewhat nostalgic cheese. American cheese has been a top choice for many folks for hamburgers and classic grilled cheese sandwiches for decades!

Bacon: This is an optional ingredient, but it adds that distinctive salty, savory flavor that makes the cheeseburger sliders irresistible. The bacon flavor is especially delicious with the subtle sweetness of the Hawaiian Sweet Rolls.

Scroll to the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    📖 Substitutions

Just like a classic cheeseburger, sliders are easily customizable for your taste and preferences. Here are a few substitutions to make your perfect slider!

Cheese: When the goal is a melty cheese that doesn't separate or get greasy when heated, American cheese is pretty much foolproof. But you could swap it for slices of Havarti, Provolone, Monterey Jack or Colby-Jack cheese - all of which also melt easily when heated.

A knife slices dinner rolls in half.

Rolls: I'm a big fan of the King Hawaiian Sweet Rolls for this recipe, but as long as you are using pre-baked dinner rolls that aren't separated into individual rolls, the result will be great. Just slice down the middle (see photo above) to create a top and bottom layer.

Sesame Seeds: While you don't have to sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the sliders with the melted butter, it's a nice touch and adds to the eye appeal of these mini cheeseburgers. You could use (affiliate link) Everything Bagel Seasoning instead if that's what you have on hand. Or skip the topping altogether.

    🍔 Step-by-Step Instructions

Uncooked hamburger in a skillet on the stove, and cooked hamburger with diced bacon, dried onion and sauce in a cup.

Step 1: Place a medium-sized skillet on the stove and spray with Pam or add a few teaspoons of vegetable oil. Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink. (Photo #1)

Step 2: Drain the beef and return it to the skillet. Add the dried onion flakes, Worcestershire sauce and cooked bacon bits (bacon is optional). Sprinkle a few tablespoons of water on top of the ingredients in the skillet. Cook and stir for a minute or two or until the onion flakes have softened and the water evaporates. (Photo #2)

Hawaiian rolls halved on a baking sheet and with sliced cheese on top.

Step 3: Slice the entire package of Hawaiian Sweet Rolls in half, creating a bottom and top layer. The bottom layer is shown above. (Photo #3)

Step 4: Place the slices of American cheese on top of the bottom layer. (Photo #4) If you use more than 5 slices - which is especially delicious - overlap the additional cheese slices to cover the rolls evenly. This will add to the cheesiness of the sliders!

Ground beef added to the top of sliced cheese on the bottom half of Hawaiin rolls.

Step 5: Spoon the cooked ground beef mixture from the skillet onto the cheese slices. (Photo #5)

Step 6: Spread the cooked meat across the cheese slices to evenly distribute the beef. This ensures that each slider will have plenty of meat. Don't worry if some of the ground beef falls off the edge of the sweet rolls. Those pieces can be scooped up when it's time to serve. (Photo #6)

Shredded cheese on top of cooked ground beef.

Step 7: Sprinkle the grated Cheddar cheese on top of the beef. (Photo #7)

Step 8 Spread the cheese across all of the ground beef. (Photo #8)

Cheeseburger sliders being brushed with butter and on a baking sheet.

Step 9: Place the top half of the Hawaiian Sweet Rolls on the beef and cheese layer and brush each roll with melted butter. (Photo #9)

Step 10: Sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the butter - and take a second to check out those layers of beefy, cheesy goodness! (Photo #10)

Cheeseburger sliders baked, and being sliced.

Step 11: Check the sliders after 10 minutes of baking. Since all of the ingredients are already cooked or baked, we just need to make sure the cheese is melted and the tops of the rolls are lightly browned. (Photo #11)

Step 12: Remove the sliders from the oven and use a serrated knife - or any sharp slicing knife - to gently separate the rolls. This will make it easier for folks to dish up each slider. (Photo #12)

    Pro Tip

Use a few extra slices of American cheese on the bottom layer if you'd like to add to the cheesiness of the sliders. (So good!) I often use 8 slices, just overlap them or even double the layer and use 10 slices.

    💭 Recipe FAQs

Could I use fresh onions in place of dried onion flakes?

That's a delicious option. Cook the diced, fresh onions in the skillet before adding the ground beef. (Scroll up to the Substitutions heading for more details.)

How do I store and reheat leftovers?

Place leftover cheeseburger sliders in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

To reheat, place them on a microwave-safe plate and warm up at half power until the cheese is softened and the rolls are warm, about 45 seconds to 1 minute.

You could also reheat them in an oven at 325° F for 10 minutes.

The microwave reheating option is the easiest.

    Can I freeze cheeseburger sliders?

Yes. After baking, cool the sliders wrap each one individually in plastic wrap and freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

To defrost, unwrap the frozen sliders and bake in an oven at 325° F for 15-20 minutes or until warmed.

Could I use American cheese on both the top and bottom layer of the sliders?

Sure. That would make the sliders extra cheesy!

🥓 What to Serve with Cheeseburger Sliders

Condiments: Any condiment that you would normally serve with hamburgers is delicous with sliders. I recommend ketchup, mustard, Homemade Fry Sauce and mayonnaise. But it's fun to change it up a bit and also share your favorite BBQ sauce or a variety of spicy and sweet mustards.

Classic Cheeseburger Sides: No matter the time of year, any side dish that you would serve with burgers from the grill will be a welcome side for sliders. Sweet Corn Pasta Salad is delicious, Crunchy Cole Slaw, English Pea Salad or my favorite Red Potato Salad.

Pickles and Tomatoes: Sliced pickles, a crispy cucumber salad or big slices of fresh tomatoes are a wonderful side with sliders!

French Fries: As a food blogger in Idaho, I would be remiss not to mention potatoes in this recipe.

    Pro Tip

Be careful not to overbake the sliders. Check them after 10 minutes of baking. Since the ground beef is already cooked and the rolls are pre-baked, we just want to melt the cheese and give the top of the rolls a light brown "toasting." I've always found 10-15 minutes is plenty of time.

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb. ground beef
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
    • ½ cup bacon - OPTIONAL. Cook and crumble about 4 or 5 slices or use packaged, real bacon crumbles
    • 3 tablespoons water
    • 12-16 King Hawaiian Sweet Rolls - one package
    • 5 slices American cheese - or add several extra slices
    • 1 cup Cheddar cheese - grated
    • 1 tablespoon butter - melted
    • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350°F.

    Cook the Ground Beef

    • Place a medium-sized skillet on the stove and spray with Pam or add a few teaspoons of vegetable oil. This keeps the hamburger from sticking to the skillet while it cooks.
Turn the heat to medium-high and let it heat for a moment or two, place the ground beef in the skillet. Use a fork or spatula to break the beef apart as it cooks, as an option you can sprinkle a little salt and pepper on the beef.
    • Once the beef is browned spoon it onto a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
    • Return the beef to the same skillet, and adjust the heat to medium. Add the Worcestershire sauce, dried onion flakes, cooked bacon and stir to combine.
Sprinkle the water on top of the ingredients in the skillet.
Cook and stir for a minute or two or until the onion flakes have softened and the water evaporates.

    Slice the Rolls, Layer Cheese

    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, set aside.
    • Use a serrated bread knife to carefully slice the entire package of attached Hawaiian rolls in half, creating a bottom and top layer.
    • Place the bottom layer of the rolls on the parchment paper and cover with the slices of American cheese.
Use a few extra slices of cheese if you'd like to add to the cheesiness of the bottom layer.
    • Spread the cooked meat across the cheese slices to evenly distribute the beef so that each slider will have plenty of meat.
    • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the beef.
    • Place the top of the rolls over the beef and cheese.
Brush the top of the rolls with the melted butter and sprinkle the sesame seeds across the top.
To Make Ahead: At this point, you can cover the rolls on the baking pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate them until you are ready to bake. I recommend baking within 24 hours to ensure the rolls don't dry out. When it comes time to heat the sliders follow the heating instructions below. Keep in mind, that the chilled sliders may need a few extra minutes in the oven.

    Bake and Serve

    • Place the baking sheet with the rolls in the preheated oven.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the tops of the rolls are lightly browned and the cheese is melted.
    • Use the serrated knife to gently cut along the lines of the rolls and cut through to the bottom roll.
Serve with an assortment of condiments, relish or pickles. .

    Notes

Be careful not to overbake the sliders. Check them after 10 minutes of baking. Since the ground beef is already cooked and the rolls are pre-baked, we just want to melt the cheese and give the top of the rolls a light brown "toasting." I've always found 10-15 minutes is plenty of time.
